About Conway Transport

Based in Newcastle West, Co. Limerick and in business for over 30 years, Conway Transport prides itself on providing a top class haulage, parce, and pallet distribution service.

From humble beginnings, this successful, family-run concern now operates a fleet of over 30 vehicles and 15 trailers from a 10,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art premises in Desmond Busines Park.

Conway boasts an impressive client list that includes leading courier and distribution companies which are all household names.

The company wqas established in 1992 as a limited company by directors Gerard and Claire Conway who had previously operated their transport business as a sole trader. The origin of the business sprung from an idea generated by Gerard Conway who had a lot of experience as a driver in the haulage business and felt that he had the necesary skills and qualities to start his own transport company.

In 1984 he purchased his first van and immediately secured a contract collecting and delivering freight in the Munster area. He had built up a number of contacts from his previous employment, all of whom proved to be invaluable when launching.

The initial capital necessary for commencing the business came from savings mainly and with the help and support of the local Allied Irish Bank.

For many years all members of the Conway family were involved to some extent in the running of the firm. Gerard’s wife, Claire, who was an accounting teacher min the local Vocational schoolo, had a huge input into the financial aspect of the business.

As students, Pat and Peter both worked in the business at various levels and school holidays were spent out on routes assisting drivers with collections and deliveries, while Clara, the eldest, helped out in the office during her school holidays.

In those years the business operated mainly from a premises at the family hyome at Garryduff, Newcastle West, employing approximately 10 people.

The business went from strength to strength which necessitated securing new premises. Currently the company has over 30 vehicles serving clients varying from articulated trucks, rigid trucks to small parcel vans relevant to customer needs. Among the Conway fleet are six MAN tractor units, seven MAN rigids, one Mercedes Benz seven-and-a-half tonne truck and a number of Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit vans.

Conway Transport has enjoyed the benefit of a very loyal workforce, with some staff members with the company for more than 15 years.

The operations manager is Gerard’s son Peter, who with his roots firmly established in the transport business from a young age, bringa a weaalth of skills and knowledge to his position.

In recent times challenging conditions have placed huge emphasis on controlling running costs. Tight cost controls have ensured that the company has retained it’s market share in the face of severe competition.

Inh the past 30 years Conway Transport has had a wide customer base, but in more recent years they have concentrated on contracts with multinational companies with the main focus on air and road freight.

A combination of factors, including continuously meeting customer requirements, re-investing in staff development and training, maintaining a modern fuel-efficient fleet of vehicles and finally the ability to meet challenges head-on, have all contributed to the company’s growth and success.
